Key Stage 1 is taught as one class consisting of children in year 1 and year 2. The class is called Robins.
The Curriculum
The children continue their reading learning journey from foundation stage through the Read Write Inc phonics programme. Maths is taught using the Power Maths scheme as well as additional activities to support fluency and number sense. Phonics, English and Maths are mainly taught in the morning.
Children learn a wide variety of topics in science based on the physics, chemistry and biology. Learning is via research, investigations, and observations.
The foundation subjects are mainly taught in the afternoon. These are art, computing, design and technology, geography, history, music, PE, PSHE and R.E.
A national Phonics Screening Test is completed in year 1 and in year 2 children complete national tests for reading, writing and maths.
Children have the opportunity to go on trips termly linked to the curriculum, perform a play at the end of the autumn term and participate in Forest School.
The curriculum is enriched by events that reflect the world around us. These have included themed days for Anti-Bullying Awareness week, World Book Days and celebrating the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee. The children are encouraged to think of how Offord Primary School fits into the local community and raise money or collect food for charities such as Children in Need or Godmanchester Food Bank. It is important to us that the children of Offord Primary School have a balanced education that reflects the here and now and the society we live in.
